3. Express your opinion regarding NAS Academy’s decision to sell the tattooing art of Apo Whang-Od?
1. 3. Express your opinion regarding NAS Academy’s decision to sell the tattooing art of Apo Whang-Od?
Answer:
I believe that NAS Academy was behaving inappropriately when they tried to sell the tattooing art of Apo Whang-Od.
First of all, it seems like she was not even aware of what was going on. Based on videos, they did not explain to her what they planned to do. This sounds like exploitation to me. They planned to profit off of her by using her name, but they did not even explain to Apo Whang-Od what they really wanted to.
Next, we have to understand that this is an important ritual to their people. There should be laws in place to protect them from people who just want to profit off of them. It is a big part of their culture, so it feels disrespectful for these foreigners to rip them off and make money from it. The community will not get anything out of the commodification of theri culture, which makes it feel even more inappropriate.
Third, NAS Academy was actually violating laws with what they did. Philippine law says that free and prior informed consent is required, as well as the "consensus of all members of the ICCs/IPs". It is clear that they did not accomplish this even if they claimed to have the signature of Apo Whang-Od herself. There are policies that try to protect our indigenous people from businessmen like them.
Overall, I am glad that the organizers were stopped in time. It is a shame that it almost did, but we should always look out for the most vulnerable members of the population
